Thank you to everyone for your support, with the efforts to have our rinks re-opened. With many meetings and a huge Rally a few weeks ago, the message was sent to the city that our Rinks were too important to close. Thank you to the Dartmouth Whalers, and the Dartmouth Ringette Association for all of their teamwork and support throughout the process.


DISAPPOINTING NEWS ABOUT RINKS IN OUR COMMUNITY

The Gray and the Bowles Arena are closing for the Spring and Fall of this year. The shut down affects our Spring program in April and May and our Fall programs in September. The closer of the two HRM rinks in the Dartmouth area is causing reduced ice, sporadic schedule times, and travel to the BMO centre for Dartmouth Residents registering for Spring and Fall skating programs. Our Club is currently working with the Whalers Minor Hockey Association, and the Dartmouth Ringette Association, to try and get these rinks or rink re-opened for September 2012. Location: Cole Harbour Place

Date: August 31st
Time: 6pm-9pm
Registration will be on a first come first serve basis.

Tentative times for the Cole Harbour Place skating sessions (skaters Ages 4-10)
4-4:40, 4:40-5:20 & 5:20-6:00 (adult and teen skaters can register for the 5:20 class)
Preschool session for ages 3-5 who have never skated before: 4-4:30 @ CHP

Tentative time for the Gray Arena Canskate session
Wednesday Canskate 510 to 550

Please join Dartmouth Skating Club in wishing Good Luck to two of our home club skaters Clara Jane Moran and Stephie Walmsley at Skate Canada Challenge this coming week in Regina, SK.

This is a national competition that includes the top 4 skaters from all provinces and territories (8 for QC). The top 18 then go on to Nationals.
The Skate Canada Challenge is live streaming on Skatebuzz

The Pre Novice Short and Long programs will be live streamed along with the Novice Long, starting approximately noon on December 1, 2011. A full schedule is available at Skatebuzz.

DSC Home Club Skater has been named to the 2011 Nova Scotia Canada Games Team

Stephanie Walmsley has been named to the 2011 Nova Scotia Canada Games Team. Stephie has participated in several competitions this season, notably Thornhill Summer Skate (4th) and Octoberfest Fall Skate (4th) in Ontario, and Fall Skate in New Brunswick (3rd). She placed 2nd at Nova Scotia Sectional Competition, earning herself a place on the Nova Scotia team participating in Eastern and Western Challenge in Mississuaga ON

Emma Lohnes at Figure 8 Autumn Skate

Emma Lohnes went to the Figure 8 Autumn Skate held in Ottawa Sept 20-23. She got her personal best of 66.2. And, at the competition, she achieved 1st place in pre-novice. Congratulations Emma!

Dartmouth Skating Club Clothing

DSC will be selling clothing with the Club logo again this year, in time for Christmas! Sample jackets have arrived and are available for viewing in the Club Room at the Gray Arena. We expect to have sample Stormtech jackets and pants, Trimark fleece jackets and warmup jackets available for viewing by October 27th. Last day to order is November 11th. Ice Schedule

Recreational Skating Registrations

Recreational skating programs are offered on Sundays, Mondays and Saturdays over 2 terms. Term 1 has started, but there are still some spots available.

Please pre-register for all Term 2 sessions by October 21st to ensure a spot. We have many registrations for Term 2 already.

New Program Manager

As many of you know, Linda Chaisson retired as the Dartmouth Skating Club's Program Manager earlier this year. We sent Linda off in style at our Awards Banquet. We'll really miss her! We're pleased to have Tasha Gallant step in as our Program Manager. Tasha has been working with Linda for several years, and was our Assistant Program Manager. Angela Derochie joins DSC coaching staff!

The DSC is very pleased to welcome Angela Rerochie to our coaching team. Angela will be familiar to many skaters as she was the 1998 Canadian Women's Senior Skating Champion. She was a 7-year member of the Canadian National Team and has represented Canada internationally including World's. Angela has achieved Gold Freeskate, Dance, Figures and Artistic as well as Senior Competitive skating levels. She brings 10 years of coaching experience to our club and has worked with some of Canada's best coaches including Brian Orser, Luis Stong and Doug Haw. She is NCCP Level 2 certified, has completed Level 3 theory and is actively working toward level 3. Angela is available to teach private lessons. She can be reached at 877-0963.
Good news for active kids!

The provincial government has announced a healthy living incentive for Nova Scotia children. The incentive provides an allowable tax expense, starting at $150 per child, to help with the cost of registering children and youth in sport or recreation activities that offer health benefits. The Dartmouth Skating Club has registered with Nova Scotia Health Promotion which means that skaters aged 18 and under who are registered in our Club will be eligible for a tax credit. For the 2005 tax year, only receipts issued July 1 or later are eligible. To receive the credit, parents/guardians must keep the receipt and claim the credit on their tax return..
